In the block adjoining Macky, Logan’s there was considerable damage uy water and smoke to promises occupied by Stone (bootmaker), Todd (tailor), Schneideraan (tailor), Hill and Plummer (oil and colourmen), and the London and Berlin Piano Co. It caused lesser damage to the premises of Kiunear (dentist;, and the Singer Sowing -Machine Co. Stone carried a heavy stock of leather goods. His loss is heavy. Some burning timber on the roof of the A.M.P. building on the opposite side of Queen Street v. as promptly extinguished 'by firemen. Macky, Logan and Caldwell’s loss is estimated at fully £150,090. It is understood that various insurance companies hold risks of £05,0 )0 on the stock and £13,000 on the buildings. Hill and Plummer’s stock was badly damaged i>y water. It is insured for £14,000, principally in the South British office. The London and Berlin Piano Company’s stock is valued at £2OOO to £3OOO, fairly covered oy insurance. Schueideman Bros’ stock was valued at about £BOOO. They had just moved in. It was insured prior to removal, and instructions were posted at ton o’clock last night to have the stock and building insured. A fireman named Jack McArthur was rather severely bijureO by falling debris. He was taken to tne hospital.

ORIGIN A MYSTERY. A SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCE. Auckland, November 17. The origin of the fire is a mystery. A constable on the. boat when passing earlier in the evening saw the Elliott Street door of Macky, Logan’s warehouse open. Ho is inclined to the belief that some one had broken into the building. DETAILS OF DAMAGE. Auckland, November 17. Investigation shows that the damage by Hie lire extended considerably outside Macky Logan’s warehouse. The City Chambers, a big four-storied block on; the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets caught fire on top. At least half a dozen occupants of offices and shops suffered very heavily. The fire got into flic workroom of Holland (tailor) on the fourth story and caused a great deluge of water to l)e rushed through the building to the casement, with the result that the Tiffin restaurant will have to be redecorated. Ranga, indent agent, sustained a loss of from £2OO to £3OO. Rocks and Woodward’s tobacconist shop on the ground floor was damaged to the extent of about £3OO. Holdesworth’s emporium caught lire and was half destroyed. The damage to Ids building is estimated at £IOOO and to stock £6OO. Holdesworths own tin's property. Theirs is a heavy loss though they are covered to the extent of £I2OO by insurance. Hill and Plummer estimate their loss at £IOOO to £ISOO and Stone estimates the damage to his boot emporium by water at £2OOO.
