The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY NOVEMBER, 10th 1911. THE COUNTY CHAIRMAN
Mr Gob. A. Marchant, who for some 20 odd years lias served the Stratford County with distinguished ability, most of that time continuously in the County Council and for many years as Chairman of that body, was defeated at the recent polls by the narrow margin of one vote. There was certainly no honest causa to reject Mr Marchant, or oven to be dissatisfied with his administration, and W2 can only attribute his defeat to the apathy of ratepayers who looked ■upon his return as so assured that they did not take the trouble to vote for him. From all sides expressions of deep regret at the loss of Mr Marchant’s services come to us, and in all parts of the County, ratepayers feel that Mr Merchant's rejection is little short of a calamity to the Council. With the enormous amount of work that has to bo transacted each month, tact, experience, and strength are needed to cope with it. These qualifications Mr Marchant possesses to a degree: unfortunately they are a rare combination, and good chairmen are exceedingly scarce. Mr Merchant’s rejection is a striking example of the gratitude one may expect for real, honest public service.
