SYDNEY WHARF STRIKE

ANOTHER OUTBREAK

(Received 10, 9.40 a.m.) Sydney, November 10.

The trouble with the wharf labourers as far as the interstate wharves arc concerned has been renewed. The point of dispute is one of overtime. At first the men demanded the same rates of overtime for working as the deep-sea men. This was refused. Those working general cargo knocked off for tea at 5 o’clock instead of, 5.30, as provided in the agreement. They turned up again to start overtime work at G instead of G. 30, out the owners declared this was a breach of the agreement, and declined to allow them to start till 6.30. The men thereupon left the wharves, other gangs coming on at 7, but they were not allowed to start. Woik was stopped on all interstate wharves with the exception of the Union Co.’s, where the men were allowed to start at G, because it was absolutely necessary to finish loading certain vessels. As soon as the men refused duty, the head officers of the Interstate Shipofng companies in Melbourne wore- informed. * It is understood that the Shipowners’ Federation will take a firm stand and enforce the agreement. When the men present themselves this morninv they will probably find the gates of the Interstate wharves closed against them. ;
