STRIKES
(Received 6, 9.40 a.m.) Sydney, November 6. Archbishop Kelly declares that strikes are the last things Australians should resort to. Strikes put back the progress of a country quite unjustifiably in a land like this.

STEAMER ASHORE,
Sydney, November 0. The steamer Port Stevens is ashore at -North Head. She is high and dry, and is unlikely to be refloated. All on board are safe'.
INDUSTRIAL UNREST.
Melbourne, November 6. Tim Engine-drivers and Firemen’s Association have issued an ultimatum to the proprietors of the Lyell mine that the drivers and firemen will cease work to-day if not granted the terms set out in Mr. Justice Higgins’ proSosed award; also that the motor rivers and electrical workers will come out unless the terms proposed in the'award are granted to the Broken Hill men. Neither the engine-driv-ers or will-return to work until the following terms have been conceded Recognition of union, eighthours’ principle, increase of wages, a conference with the directors and an agreement signed by the directors and union officials.
The secretary of the Engine-drivers’ Union states that the claim for the reinstatement of White has dropped. (Received 6, 1.30 p.m.) Sydney, November 6. All sections of wharf labourers have resumed working quietly. SINKING OF A STEAMER. Brisbane, November 6. News ■ received from Swato, China, reports the loss of the steamer Isle, bound to Japan from Hongkong. She encountered a typhoon and sank. The captain’s children, also the Chinese crew, were drowned. The bodies were washed ashore, and the natives stripped off their clothing, and also tried to tear the jewellery from the living.
