ALLEGED LIBEL.

Mr Joseph McCluggage, Liberal candidate for the Stratford seat, to-day instructed his solicitors to issue a writ claiming £IOOO damages for an alleged libel which appeared in the “New Zealand Town and Country Life” (a weekly paper published in Auckland) on September 6th. The* libel is in connection with a reference to what is known as the Finch am incident, after detailing which the paper went,on to say : “By n curious coincidence, the ‘New Zealand Times,’ when publishing this forged letter also published, immediately above it, a letter signed ‘Joseph McCluggage,’ bearing the same address and date (i.e., ‘Stratford, August 23rd,’) as the alleged ‘Edward Fincham’ epistle. Mr McCluggage, who is the Government candidate for Stratford, and who will, therefore, be Mr Hinc’s opponent at the November elections, also endeavoured to cast the slur of untruthfulness upon Mr Hine. ’
