Newton King's Weekly Report. On Friday, 27 th October, I hold my annual bull fair at Stratford and had a good attendance considering the boisterous weather. Only about -4 of the entries came forward, and the quality throughout was only fair. Bidding was brisk for the Shorthorn and Jersey bulls but the second grade cattle were very slow. Only one Holstein bull was entered, and realised £l3 ss, Shorthorn bulls from £7 to £l3, Jerseys £5 to £9, yearling do. £2 15s to £3, Ayrshire bulls £5 17s Gd to £6 ss. .1 am holding a supplementary bull fair on the 6th November.
At Urenui on Monday, 30th, 1 had a large entry and a good attendance of the public. Bidding throughout was good and practically everything was sold before the end of the sale. Yearling heifers made £2 11s to £2 18s Gd, yearling steers £2 11s to £2 12s, 15 to 18-month steers £3 Gs, to do £4 to £4 Bs, store cows £3 5s to £3 10s Gd, forward £3 17s to £4 Bs, fats £5 18s, bullocks (poor) £5 18s, 4-yoar do. £G 10s, cows and calves £3 10s to £4 4s, empty heifers (good) £4. 5s to £4 Bs, small £3 8s to £3 15s springing cows £4 17s Gd to £7 15s, springing heifers £5 2s Gd to £7 ss, bulls £4 to £6 ss, wethers 14s, fat do. 17s, hoggets 12s lOd to 14s lOd, ewes and lambs 11s lOd, old owes 3s 9d to Bs. Mr C. Topliss, jun., yarded a nice line of young bulls in the pink of condition and they met with keen inquiry, the Shorthorns realising £5 10s to £9 10s, and the Holsteins £l2 ss.
At Stratford on Juesday, 31st, there was a very heavy yarding, practically every pen being full. Forward cows and yearling heifers sold well but the demand for stores was not so keen. A nice line of 15-months grade Jersey heifers realised £3 15s Gd, yearling heifers £2 12s to £2 15s 6d, yearling steers £2 10s to £2 13s Gd, mixed yearlings £2 10s 6d, forward cows £3 17s to £4 14s, stores £2 14s Gd to £3 11s, empty 2-year heifers £3 7s' to £4 Is, yearling bulls £2 Bs, Jersey do. £5 2s Gd, fat cows £6. On the same day at my springing heifer yards I had a good entry though the bidding was not so brisk as at recent sales. Good heifers and cows sold well, though second grade stock were hard to quit. Springing heifers (good) £6 los to £lO los, others £3 5s to £6, cows springing and in milk £G to £lO 7s Gd. At Stony River on Wednesday all available pens were filled and there was a large attendance of the public. Bidding was only fair, but good business resulted during the day. Yearling to 15-month heifers made £2 12s to £2 17s, yearling steers £2 6s Gd to £2 14s Gd, Jersey yearling heifers £3 7s, 2-year empty heifers £3 IGs Gd to £4 7s, store cows £2 to £3 12s Gd, boners 15s to 31s, forward cows £3 13s to £3 19s, 2-year steers £4 4s, bulls £5 to £8 ss, fat cows £5 3s to £6 7s, springing heifers £4 10s to £5; gig £l7. During the week I have sold several lines of fat and store cattle and sheep as follows: Fat bullocks £9 ss, £lO ss, £lO 15s, £11; bulls £6, £7, £lO 10s, £ll ss; 2-year empty heifers, £4 10s; forward cows, £3 ss; store cows, £2 Gs; dairy cows, £7, £8 10s, £l2; tal sheep, 225; hoggets, 12s 9d, 14s; owes and lambs IGs Gd; draught gelding, £32 10s; yearlings £2 12s to £2 15s.
