A GREAT VICTORY.
Tho victory of the Turks and Arabs over the Italians recently, is m all probability only a temporary check to Liie Italian forces, Out the victory ol the saiiu people of Maine over the fanatics of that much-advertised State, concerning the liquor question, is a victory' maraiug an epoch on the question. For a long time the proinoitionists have hold up the State 01 Alamo as the model prohibition experiment, and stated through tne press that they were prepared to stand or fall by this model State. However, although Maine has fallen, tne prohibitionists as usual, adopting the principle -that the cud justifies the means, are endeavouring to cloud the issue as to the actual figures of the voting in Maine until alter the polls are held here. In a very off-nami manner they' also declare that tnc public have heard enough of Maine, which is possibly true, seeing that the prohibitionists screeched it in season and out of season, but tho fact of the matter is that tiie public have not heard sufficient of the truth about Maine. When prohibition was made part and parcel of the Constitution of Maine, tin’s issue was carried by a majority of 40,000, and was repealed at the recent polls by' a majority of 300—thus close on 47,000 voters changed over to the Trade from tiie nrohibitionisls. Following are some of tlio figures of the voting in the large centres; —-
Orators employed by the prohibition party 7 against the Trade are certainly for tJ;o most part plausible to a degree, and are past masters in twisting ■ filings to suit their argument, but in tho ease of Maine, neither plausibility ’or iideptness in the art of oratory \ ill enable tiie party to explain away the fact that after fifty-three years’ 'xperienco of prohibition the principle of tho doctrine has received its death blow, in the one-time model prohibition State. Maine has fallen, and with its fall goes another false ideal.*
