ASHBURTON SHOW

The Ashburton A. and P. Association’s thirty-fourth annual show was opened to-uay in line iiot weather, fiiiitries are nigher than last year, though not up to tho record, and competition is keen in many of the sheep and horse classes. Taken generally the display ot stock is distinctly meritorious, though all of it will not be on the grounds till to-morrow.

TROUBLE AT NAPIER HOSPITAL

Napier, November 1. An inquiry by the Hospital Board into the management of the Napier aospital was commenced yesterday, and concluded to-day. Hr. \ alintine (Inspector-General ol Hospitals) was present. The inquiry was directed in Die first instance to ascertain -the reason for so many (some thirty) resignations of nurses during the past two years, but the board unanimously decided that the management so far as the nursing staff was concerned was satisfactory. Further _ inquiry is being conducted by Dr. \ alintine into the relations between the medical superintendent and the honorary medical staff, which, it is alleged, are unsatisfactory. BEEEDERS’ ASSOCIATION. Palmerston North, November 1. A special general meeting of the New Zealand Breeders’ Association, held to-night, decided to transfer its headquarters from Masterton to Feilding; also that all meec.ngs be held at Palmerston. Mr Wackrill, of Feilding, was appointed secretary, in place of Mr (I. E. Sykes, of Masterton. resigned. A PECULIAR CASE. Timaru, November 1. In a suit, D. C. Turnbull and Co., grain merchants, of -I imam, v. h. MacManomin, Ellerslie, Auckland, for £l7 <)s ocl, value of consignment of oats sold to the defendant through one Kohn, grain broker, of Auckland, it came out that defendant paidKohn for the oats before ho received them. Plaintiff stated that ho shipped to defendant, not to Kohn ; in fact, Kohn had died before they were shipped. Counsel for defendant said that alter seeing plaintiff’s bonks he advised a settlement. It was unfortunate that defendant should have to pnv twice. Judgment went to the plaintiff.
