EM’S CRi£ V A NOES. (Per Press Association) Wellington, October 28. Regarding the' Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants’ petition, the committee recommends the Goverujment to set up a Board of Commission to enquire into the second division’s petition with a view to recommending the host methods of removing any grievances or anomalies that may exist. The report by the Railway Committee presented to the House this morning on the grievance of the first division of the railway service, recoin mends that tiiose reduced in status during the last few years as set nut iu clause 6 of the petition should lie restored where traffic is maintained; that in connection with promotions regulation 40 be carried out and where an officer is not recommended for promotion ho be immediately supplied with a copy of the report, giving reasons; that adjustment of classification is desirable-; and that the Government ho recommended to go into the whole question of regrading the first division with a view to more adcouately remunerating officers generally; striking out the ninth grade and fixing a maximum of £220 for officers who fail to qualify for promotion; that regulations re leave of absence be brought into conformity with those of other branches of the public service; that the staffing of stations. bo reviewed with a view to reducing excessive hours where they exist; that regulation 17 bo altered to allow three days at the commencement of a journey and ten after arrival where officers are transferred to meet the exigencies of the Department; that the evidence before the committee does not justify it in recommending the abolition of the Minister’s veto on appeal board decisions.
