HEAD OF THE NAVY.
ME CHURCHILL’S OPPORTUNITY. HIS MOVEMENTS KEENLY WATCHED. London, October 24. There is consensus -of opinion that Mr Winston Churchill has now a, great opportunity as head of the Navy, and all are anxiously waiting to see how ho will uso it. Ho is known to'favour King Edward’s preference for Dreadnoughts. The Times states that Mr Churchill has latterly shown appreciation of the vital necessity for the unquestionable strength of the navy, and hopes he will not be behind his predecessor in maintaining its efficiency. Thet Morning Post states that Mr Churchill’s appointment is an indication. that the Government is beginning to recognise the extreme urgency of national defence, and eulogises Mr Churchill’s abilities and strength of purpose. Lord Haldane, speaking at Birmingham, declared that the Territorial Force was a great school, and was improving the nation’s manhood. It might bo based some day on compulsory service. ' GERMANY INTERESTED. I Berlin, October 25. The newspapers are keenly intcr3sted in Mr Churchill’s appointment.
