NO-LICENSE IN WAIHI.

A MISLEADING TELEGRAM

(Per Press Association )

Waihi, October 17. ( A curious mistake in the transmission of a wire to the Mayor. of Waihi (Mr J. Newth) led to a deputation of business men and property owners waiting upon him this afternoon. it appears that the wire as received by the Mayor was as follows: “Did town properties increase in value result abolishing licenses?”' The Mayor’s answer was “No.” This anwer was the text for a public statement by a no-licenso leader that property values had increased in Waihi during no-license. A deputation waited on the Mayor in connection i with these statements.

The Mayor explained that reference to tbs original copy received from Wellington showed the word “iniprja have been “decreased” Ho* further stated that if tiie wire had been received as put in at the Te Aroha office his reply would have been “lies,” as, in his opinion, Waihi had not received cither moral or material benefit as a result of no-liconse. The Mayor has made a tsatuary declaration to the above effect.
