NOTES BY THE WAY
The Lands Committee have reform the petition of seventy-four Pahiutu. settlors, asking--that the Balfour Estate bo acquired for closer settlement to the Government for favourable conideration. Tiie same recommendation was made in the case of the Hcllersden Estate, Marlborough. Sir Joseph Ward announced on Friday evening that he would move to suspend the Standing Orders to enable new business to be taken after 12.30 a.m. Ho would also ask if tbfi Speaker would consider whether the. time had arrived when Bills could be put through all stages in one sitting. The Speaker said ho would give his reply on Monday. The Petitions Committee of the House of Representatives, reporting on a petition from four Auckland residents, expresses the opinion that £IOOO a year should be granted by the Government to each of the city (four) art societies.
