MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.
AGAINST A TAXI-CAB DRIVER. (Per Press Association) Auckland, October 13. An inquest concerning the death of Charles Goldsmith, who was killed on tho night of October 9, concluded today.- Deceased was a passenger on an Epsom traracar, and after stepping off the car lie was knocked down by a taxi-cab driven by John William Mercer, and received injuries which resulted fatally. The jury returned the following verdict: “That Charles Goldsmith died very suddenly near Owens Road, Epsom, on October 9th, 1911, and that the cause of his death was fracture of the skull and shock, and that one John William Mercer, the driver of taxi-cab No. 303. by his negligent driving, did kill the said Charles Goldsmith, and is thereby guilty of manslaughter.” The following rider was added: “The jury are of opinion that motor-cars should travel at a moderate speed when approaching tramcars when they are at stopping places.” Mercer was arrested this evening, charged with manslaughter. He was formally charged and remanded.
