Russell Till was fined 10s, with 7s costs, at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, for having failed to register i dog of a greater age than six months. A contemporary remarks “Several dairy farmers in the Manawatn have recently been sold at £6O an acre.” It would he interesting to know the exact area of a dairy farmer. A. C. Maxwell, light-weight boxing champion of New Zealand, meets J. Hoggarty, Australasian champion, at Christchurch on October 26tn. Maxwell and his trainer, Professor J. J. Stagpoole, leave for Christchurch on the 21th. number of sympathisers in Wellington and Palmerston districts subscribed £2OO and sent Pawclka out of the country, savs Wednesday’s Palmerston ‘ •Times'.” We give the statement for what it is worth, as, of course, there is no means of verifying it, though our informant professed to know. Another story is- to the effect that Pawelka’s prison clothes have been returned to the Terrace Gaol through the post from the South Island. The death occurred at New Plymouth yesterday of Mrs Smith, wife of Mr S I'ercy-Smith, cx-Surveyor-Goii 'red. Mrs Smith was a daughter of lie late Mr W. Morgan Crompton, who was an old settler of New Plymouth, and who always took a prominent part in the political life oi the district in the early days and was Speaker of the Provincial Council for a number of years. Mrs Smith came ml to New Zealand with her mother in 1853, Mr. Crompton having arrived hero throe years previously. She was married to‘Mr S. Percy-Smith in 1863.
The Government Meteorologist telegraphed this afternoon:—Westerly aeavv gale; expect unsettled and cloudy weather; rain probable; glass TalJ slowly, but unsteady. A total of CL 17 was realised at Mr. T Luston’s sale of Jerseys on Wednesday by the cow purchased by Mr. E. Kirkwood, Stratford, and her progeny. The cow itself realised 28£gns, a yearling heifer from her was purchased for 38gns, a yearling bull for 23Vgns, and a two months’ calf for 27 guineas. Judgment by default was given in the following cases at the Magistrate’s Court tliis morning:—William Charles Downes v. George Henry Thomas, £72 4s Gd, costs £5 7s; Harkncss and Grimmer v. William Blair, £8 16s 9d, costs £1 3s 6d; Reihana Apaora v. Horace Edwards, £7 Is Bd, costs £1 3s Gd; J. Masters and Son v. C. McDonald, £8 Os lOd, costs £1 6s Gd ; William ■ Sharrock v. Joseph Ceballo, £l3 7s Gd, costs £1 13s Gd.
