FIRES.
A WARNING TO SMOKERS

Hastings, October 12. A five-roomed cottage at Kararau was destroyed by firo at ,11 o’clock this morning. The owner (Thomas Ryan) .was smoking in bed, and set tiro to tire bed clotncs. He had a narrow escape. Only a little clothing was saved. Tiie house and contents were insured in the Standard office for £390.
The insurances on yesterday’s fire were £l5O on the house in the New Zealand office and £l5O on the furniture in the Alliance Office.
