SMALLPOX ABOARD A LINER
Sydney, October 11. The Eastern has arrived. The passengers and crew numbering 350, wore quarantined, owing to a case of smallpox on board. Mr. Tudor states that he will favourably entertain the proposal to compensate passengers suffering monetary loss through being ovcrcarried on the Eastern.
THE MAWSON EXPEDITION
Brisbane, October 11
The Government expressed its intention of standing in with the other States in the expenses of the Mawson ,-xpocUtion. BIRD DAY. (Received 12, 8.55 a.m.) Sydney, Ocohor 12. Bird Day, with the object of inculcating the protection ol native birds, has been inaugurated, and w is largely celebrated in the State schools. Mr. Carmichael, in an address dealing with the value < i lords to the settlers, referred ’o the wanton mischief through ladies wearing the plumage for the sake of adornitnmf. The remedy was to wear artificial plumage, it ladies must have this si vie of adornment.
