THE LAW’S LONG ARM.

ARREST AFTER TWO YEARS AND

A HALF

On September 28th last, Arthur

Money was arrested in Stratford on a / charge of having, at Grey town, on ‘ January 20th, ISO 9, received the sum -•Aof 9s 8d belonging to Thomas Richmond and Co., and failed to account therefore. He came before the Magistrate's Court in Stratford next morning and was remanded to appear at Grey town on Friday last. At Groytown, before a bench of Justices, ho pleaded not guilty. Thos. Richmond gave evidence as to accused having been in his employ as carter delivering bread and collecting in . the year 1909; that on the Bth February of that year he went away, leaving the part and horse f unattended, with the change (he had t taken with him in the morning) loft intact in the cart. On sending out * his accounts at the end of the month customers had produced receipts for amounts paid ,to accused, but which had not been paid in by him, amongst the number being one (9s 8d paid by Mrs Rees. He’had sworn an information and applied for a warrant lor accused’s arrest on that charge. The book in which accused should have entered the amounts received by him had been either lost or destroyed by prosecutor some months ago. On cross-examination, witness admitted that it happened that with accused and other carters, they had returned with more cash in I their bag than their book would acfjr count for, showing that they had received accounts and had forgotten to enter them up. No record had been kepi of these surpluses, and the daily entry in his cash book only showed the total takings of the shop and cart, so he had kept no record ol tho amounts accused had paid in from day to day. Mrs Rees gave evidence as to having paid her account, and having obtained a receipt. Accused gave evidence, denying that ho had stolen money from his employer, and gave a reasonable excuse for his leaving the district so hurriedly. Evidence as to character and, honL est y of accused was given by Mr W. Thompson, stationmaster. The Bench, after a few minutes’ consideration, dismissed ■ the case.
