FIRES.
1 - AN- UNLUCKY FLAXMILLER,
(Per Press Association.) Palmerston North, October 9
George Craw’s flaxmill at Linton was burned to the ground on Saturday while Craw was in’ Palmerston. Only three men were present at the time, all others being away at a meeting. The lire originated in the scutching department, and had a big hold before being discovered. This is the fifth time that Craw has had his mills burned down. The damage is estimated at over £IOOO. Thirteen men wore employed at. the mill. Christchurch "October 9.
J. K. Wallace’s auction mart and offices at Kaikoura were destroyed by fire .early this morning. The building and contents were insured for £250 in the Alliance, .hut the loss greatly exceeds that amount. The sura of £IOO was in the safe in a cashbox. The coin melted and the notes burnt. The Kaikoura Racing Club’s totalisator, which was insured for £6U, .was also destroyed in the fire. Eketahuna, October 9.
A fire caused by a brazing lamp exploding, occurred this morning, and gutted premises occupied by Mr Wallace as a bike shop. A sharp fight confined the flames to this . building, the brigade doing good work with a chemical engine. The insurances on the building are. £l5O in the London, Liverpool and Globe, and on Wallace’s stock and tools £2OO in the State office. .
