William Sharp, aged .‘55 years, committed suicide by cutting iiis ‘throat with a ray.or at Tokomaru Bay. He had been drinking heavily.

About six weeks ago an old settlor named John Bogan’,) who resided on the Napier Road, about a mile from Ashhnrst township, had been to town during the evening and left at 10 p.m. for his home, but be never reached there. The police subsequently took the matter in hand, and the mystery has now been solved by the finding of Bogan’s body in the Manawatu River in the Gorge, about a mile from the Ashhufst bridge. According to a statement made by a Chinaman to the police, a,.., parcel was found in the gateway of his house in Haining Street on Saturday night. Ho. kicked it into the gutter, and a neighbour opening it found it contained the dead body of an infant. So far the mother has not been traced. Christchurch, October 9.
Arthur Edward James, a resident of Sydenham, died in the hospital last night as a result of gunshot wounds received during the afternoon. Janies, with two companions, Kcnnard and Mather, was shooting hares near Kirwee. When Kennard was climbing over a gate with his gun at full cock the gun went off, shooting James, who was sitting by the roadside, in the head, arms, and chest. ; ’ 1 ■ ‘ 1 Auckland, October 9.
A boy -named Clarence Kennedy, aged 11, son of Mr Kennedy, photographer at Hnntly, was drowned in the river while swimming. Auckland, October 9.
The elderly man who dropped dead in the street on Saturday has been identified'as -Major-General Hogg, who caifie here- -from- Engl.; mi every year for trout fishing.
The death has occurred if Mr Thomas St. Laurence Toner, formerly in the Government service, but latterly prominent in music circles in Napier.
Wellington, October 9
George Drake, assistant clerk of works to the Harbour Boai d met with a fatal accident on Waterloo Quay today. He was cycling along the street, when he ran into a lorry laden with flax. One of the wheels of the.lorry went over Drake’s chest, death being instantaneous. Deceased was 35 years of ago, and leaves a wife and three children.
Wellington, October 9
The Coroner opened an inquiry today concerning the death of the infant whose body was found in Raining Street on Saturday night. The medical evidence showed that death was due to; suffocation. In Dr Fyffe’s opinion the child had been purposely suffocated. There was a'Chinese strain about tiie child. The inquiry was adjourned till the 30th.
