LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP

WON BY MISS BRANDON,

(Per Press Association j Wellington, October 8. The Now Zealand ladies’ golf championship mooting .* as brought to a tioso yent -M-day on tin: Et: eiannga hots, which were in perfect order. A •'ary huge number of spectators made i- c jcuincy 'from i the special tr.u i being crowded. T e weather was again beautifully fine, everything being in favour of good golf. The great event was the final of the championship between Miss Gould (Otago) and Miss L. Brandon '(Wellington). Quito an army of spectators followed the game, among those who tramped round the links being Lord Islington and General Godley. The match gave rise to a very keen battle, which continued to the last hole. Neither player was quite at her best, nevertheless very few mistakes were made. The first hole was halved in 5. Miss Brandon taking the next in 5 to 7. Tho third was halved in 4, Miss Brandon taking the next by 4 to 5, and tho fifth in a perfect 3 to 4, this making her 3 up. The Otago lady now showed improved form, taking the Gth in G to 7, the 7th in a like score, and tiio Bth, the longest hole on the links, also in G to 7. This made them all square. Miss Goidd, showing pretty play at the Oth, holed in 4 to 5, and was now 1 up—a great recovery. Tho local player, thanks to a good putt, holed the 10th in 4 to s—all square. Miss Brandon won the 11th in 6 to 7, the next being halved in 5. The 13th fell to Miss Gould, thus again making it all square, the interest now being very keen. The local player won the next in a perfect 3to 4 by the aid of a three \ yards’ putt, but at the 15th Miss Brandon failed to carry tho high bank with her tee shot and lost in 4 to 5. All square. At the 16th, thanks to laying herself a dead stymie, Miss Gould failed, while thq 17th was halved in an excellent o. Miss Brandon being dormy at the 18th. The Otago l.idy extinguished her chance by badly topping her drive, and the second she made a great effort to recover with a magnificent cleek shot to tho green. Miss Brandon, however, playing in very correct style, holed in 5 to G, winning by 2 up amidst enthusiastic cheers for both players. Subsequently the prizes were presented lay Lord Islington, who congratulated Miss Brandon on winning the coveted honour and condoled with tho losers. Tho links, he said, were in find order. The management had been admirable, while a fine sporting spirit had been shown by all the competitors, who, he was sure, would remember the 17th annual tournament with very great pleasure . Afterwards the Wellington ladies’ Golf Club entertained the visitors to a big afternoon tea. During tho morning a consolation handicap was played, Miss Brewster winning in the under 16 ..handicap class, gwhilq ; Miss QfMeaVa Burnett Stuart tied in the over 16 handicap class.

AUCKLAND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.

Auckland, October 8

In the final for tho Auckland Golf Club’s ‘championship yesterday, 36 holes, J. C. Burns beat W. B. Colbeck, 1 up. It was a fine exhibition of golf, and the match was keenly contested.
