Mr. itobort Speight, assistant-cura-tor at the Canterbury Museum, lias been offered a position as geologist with Mawson’s expedition, and the leadership of a party which would have Maccjuarrie Island as one of its bases. Air. Speight will probably have to decline tile offer, but says he will be glad to spend some months on Macquarrio next summer if an arrangement for transport can be made, made!

A iivo-year-old boy named Edward Hawthorne Shaw was drowned in the Avon at Richmond yesterday afternoon. Ho was playing with a small companion near the river bank, and said be was going to throw a stone into the river. A little later he was missed, and his body was recovered last night. Tpe Terra Nova returned to Lyttelton from her surveying cruise this morning.
