BOWLING.
(By “Toucher.”)
Although the official opening of the Stratford bowling green does not take place until the 2nd November, about twenty members of the club took advantage of the beautiful weather yesterday afternoon to indulge in a game. The green, as lias previously been stated, is in top form, and justifies the expenditure that lias taken place upon it. So far as I can judge, the membership of the club docs not give promise of any considerable addition this season. This is a pity, because there is plenty of room for fifty more players, and one almost wonders why so many old-time votaries of the game have so studiously, avoided the green for several years past. Howpvcr, there is a good time ahead for those who are now on the roll, and I hope, although not numerically strong, the club will be able to give a good account of itself in inter-club matches.
The New Plymouth Club opened its season yesterday afternoon, when practice games were indulged in. The official opening will take office later. The greens are said to be looking and playing unusually well. The Hawera green was officially opened on Wednesday, under the most favourable weather conditions, while the green was said to be almost perfect. Visitors were present from the surrounding towns, including Stratford. The opening match—President v. Vice-President, was played, resulting in a victory for the latter by 82 to 73 points. Patea, Eltham, Inglewood—in fact, all the greens in Taranaki, have been opened for practice, if not officially.
