We are enjoying bright weather again, but with it has come several frosts which have made the early gardens look dismal. Mr Grayling the contractor on the new Porangi bridge, expects to bo finished in about a fo’'' night. The bridge when opened will pi ore a great boon to the settlers.l oyer 1 who, hitherto, have had to cross a treacherous ford to get to and from Lne township.
The new assistant teacher at the public school has arrived, and taken up her duties. The headmaster, Mr. 3. Mills, has had a very busy time this last few months, having to work such a largo school singlehanded, there being about seventy children on the roll. Messrs. Court and Cottier’s annual ball takes place on Thursday evening next. An open invitation has been extended to the public, and a tirst-class turnout may be safely counted on. A special effort is being made by Mr. Houchen, back-blocks’ missioner, to establish a Sunday-school here. The movement is worthy of practical supOn Saturday evening a complimentary supper was given by his friends and fellow-employees to Mr. W. Reynolds, who is severing connection with the local storekeepers, Messrs. Court and Cottier. Proceedings were or a most enthusiastic nature. The toast of the principal guest was drunk with musical honours, and the songs, recitations, etc., wore loudly applauded. During the evening Mr. Reynolds was presented with an angler’s outfit and a caso of pipes. Mr. Hayward, while making the presentation, spoke in most eulogistic terms of Mr. Reynolds, and expressed on behalf of all present their keen regret at the loss oi such a genial comrade. The recipient suitably acknowledged the gifts and thanked those present for their kind sentiments and good wishes. The singing -of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” concluded a very pleasant evening.
