o AN ARTESIAN FLOW. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. United Press Association. (Received 3, 9.35 a.m.) Sydney, October 3. An artesian flow of 1-1,000 gallons daily has been struck at Anson Bay, Northern Territory, outside the known artesian basin.
A REMITTED SENTENCE. Sydney, October 3. Mr Holman states that he had the concurrence of Judge Heydon in remitting a portion of Dixon’s sentence. PETROLEUM. (Received 3, 10.15 a.m.) Sydney, October 3. A new discovery of petroleum in Papua is reported, and its existence is now proved on each side of the dividing range. OBITUARY. Sydney, October 3. The deaths have occurred of Captain Pearson, well known in the New Zealand timber trade; and of Mr Stirling Whyte, actor, who formerly toured New Zealand. ARCHBISHOP CARR.
Melbourne, October 3. Archbishop Carr has celebrated the silver jubilee of his appointment to the Archbishopal .Sec of Melbourne. He declared that the Catholics would bo the centre of tho forces on the educational question at next elections. This arises out of the agitation for religions instruction in State schools. Archbishop Carr denounced the conscience clause as a. mockery, a delusion, and a.’snare.
PRICE OF BUTTER. Melbourne, October 3. The price of butter has beef) increased to 13d wholesale. The enhancement is due to the high price ruling in London. The Commonwealth experts of butter last year were 1,108,000 boxes, compared with 1,193,000 boxes in the previous .year. FALSE TRADE, DESCRIPTIONS. Melbourne, October 3. Tho total number of consignments of all commodities bearing false trade descriptions was 831, compared with 1231 in the previous year. OLD-AGE” PENSIONS. Melbourne, October 3. Old-age and invalidity pensions total 91,847, involving an expenditure of over two million pounds.
