MONTHLY MEETING

The Education Board continued its

sittings yesterday morning. Present : Messrs. H. Trimble (chairman), Adlam, Young, Cargill, Rogers, Morton, and Rev. McArthur.

The Secretary' for Education wrote as follows With reference to your application for a grant for the enlargement of the Whangamomona School, I see that the attendance for ti;e past three years has risen gradually from eleven to eighteen, which may be presumed to I e about the normal population of-the place. .’lie sudden increase to 45, one to tire influx of railway workmen, being cb- \ iously of a temporary’ character, ought, if possible, to be provided for in a temporary manner. The Secretary of the Wellington Education Board wrote that nominations for the annual election of one representative of the North Island Education Boards of the Middle University 7 District —exclusive of "Wellington—on the Committee of Advice of the Wellington Training College, would lie received until noon of Friday, September 29.—Mr. Gil- 1 bort Carson, last y r ear’s representative, and Mr. Charles M. "Whittington (chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board) asked the Board’s support.—The Board decided to again support Air. Carson’s candidature.

A notification was received from the Junior Cadet headquarters that officers’ camps of instruction would bo held late in December or early in January next on the same lines as those held last year. Free return passes on ■ both rail and steamer would be issued, subject to approval in each case; but it must be distinctly understood these passes would be issued to enable officers to attend camp, and the full time—at least a week—must be put in. The Education Department wrote that in response to requests made from various quarters it had , been decided to place a. small sum on the Estimates for the purpose of assisting uncertificated teachers in outlying districts to obtain full qualification. The amount allocated to tiiis Board for the year ending March 31, 1912, was £'oo.—Referred to the inspectors for a report. X. . , , Tlie Department notified that a rent allowance was authorised for the use of a building for school purposes at Mount Messenger.

The Secretary for Education telegraphed on August 28 that the grant tor the re-building of the Stratford District High School had been increased to £3650. The Board’s own liability and the returns from salvage would provide the balance. With reference to the Board’s application for £228 for the improvement of the teacher’s residence at Grenui, the Secretary for Education wrote that in the circumstances no more than £l5O could be allowed. If this sum were accepted by the Board it must bo upon the condition that the objectionable attachments to the house wore demolished.—Accepted. The Department notified that the request for an allowance for the erection of a teacher’s residence at York had been acceded to.

_ Mr. W. J. Smith, secretary of the Fvaimata Committee, wrote at some length regarding the difficulty experienced by the committee in*obtaining possession of the books and cash belonging to a special fund, initiated by a former committee for specific purposes.—The Board decided that it could not interfere in the matter, this being apart from the regular work of the school. ry out necessary repairs at the Ngairc School and residence, and °to erect a bathroom at the residence.

The Inglewood Committee, having a balance of £lO in hand from a fund raised for the purchase of a I'iano, which is now in the school, asked the Board to give a £ for £ subsidy on this amount for the purchase of five iron-framed seats for the school grounds.—The Board declined the request, on the ground that there were more urgent calls on .lS funds.

. An application from the Bird Committee tor additions to the school was referred to • the inspector for a report. The same course ivas adopted with regard to letters from the Hnirai’.gi, .Lincoln, and Norfolk committees re desks, and to a letter from the Bell Committee re the windows at the school.—“News.’ ’
