BIG BOXING.

McVfeA INTERVIEWED. i v ‘ . 1 • SOdNER MEET JOHNSON THAN LANGFORD. Sam MeVea, the ! cavy-weight box■r who is to take part in a number >f engagements in Sydney, arrived in Melbourne by the steamer Argyllshire m September 17th. McVoa L, perhaps, .wo or three inches shorter than lohnson, but ho appears to have tiro advantage of the champion in breadth, ind he gives one the impression of icing posesssd of great strength. Ho s the very counterpart of Johnson n more than one respect. He sports 10 jewellery, and his style in conver•■ation is entirely devoid of brag. “I’ll lo my best,*’ was the extent he would m, as ho-talked of his meeting with Johnson, “but,” he continued, “I am iy no means, without confidence. I .rave studied Johnson’s methods, and 1 can hit‘pretty hard. I think the champion will acknowledge that in the ill red ’ contests I have had with him ‘1 hit as hard as or ever harder than he did. I know all his best punches. I shall try, of course, to keep out of the .vay of his famous ‘upper cut,’ and 1 think, all things considered, that my chances are not at all bad. I shall certainly give him a hard tussle. I hope to make it the battle of John--son’s life, and I hope to secure the championship.” Speaking of Langford, who is also coming to Australia, McVca said: “He is a dangerous man at all times. He is the hardest hitter of us all, and can take any amount of punishment. My word, he can hit. I think that is the reason why Jack Johnson does not want;to meet him. Ho knows that if Langford can get in a blow the man who receives it has got to quiver. What is against Langford is that, lie is too small. I would rather meet Johnson than Langford any day, and if lie were only bigger I do not think that either Johnson or myself would 1)0 in it.”
