SHORTAGE OF LABOUR.
“The question of tho shortage of labour is one that requires immediate attention both by Government and employers of labour,” states the executive of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, in its annual report. “The Chief Inspector of Labour in this year’s report deals with tl\e matter, and expresses grave doubts as to the possibility of securing suitable hands for our factories from Great Britain. Even though that has to he admitted, your executive is of tho opinion that ono of the Dominion’s greatest needs is a progressive immigration policy, and although it may take the form of inducing and assisting families to come to New Zealand for the purpose of going on the land, the result in a comparatively short time will be that more workers will bo available for work in our trades and industries. It is certainly inimical to the best interests of tho Dominion to see some of our products, such as those handled in our jam and preserving factories, going to waste, and to realise that many thousands of pounds’ worth of goods have to he imported owing to the fact that workers are not available to cniblc manufacturers to most, the demand for local nrocluctions."
