The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1911. ENCKE’S COMET.

The Algiers Observatory announced the ro-discovcry of Encke’s comet on the night of July 31, when the comet is reported to have had the brilliancy of a tenth magnitude star. The feature that renders the discovery so exceedingly interesting is the unexpected brilliancy of , the comet. At its last return three, years ago the comet was so faint that its recorded position could be effected only by photography,. To be now so bright as the tenth magnitude would suggest that either by some process of accretion it has enlarged its mass or become more capable of reflecting the sun’s rays. First seen in T7BG, and observed regularly at every return for more than a century, Eucko’s comet has come to bo regarded as a permanent member of the solar system. Its decline in recent years, particularly in 1908, pointed- to a gradual disintegration of its material, and its recovery with the prospect of a renewed lease of life is therefore the more remarkable.
