Captain Wilkes was on the bridge practically tiro whole time since nis ship cleared Napier at 4.30 p.m. on Monday, and ever twenty hours were occupied in trying to got round Gape Palliser. The Indralcma was kept well out to sea, and so fierce was the gale that for a considerable time she l ad to remain hove to. Heavy seas were shipped fore and aft, and toe engines raced very heavily in spite of the fact that tiro governors wore on. All gear- was lashed to .be deck, but, nevertheless, everything moveable was swept about by the seas, much of it being lost overboard. During the height of the gale mountainous seas crashed on board, smashing the butcher’s shop to pieces, and sweeping it and a half ton of meat overboard. The bulwarks wore broken in several places, and the derrick carried away. One of the crew was washed against the ventilator, and was severely bruised in places. Ho was attended to on board, and is progressing satisfactorily.
