CHASED BY THE POLICE. Sydney, September 12. A man named Lloyd Prentice was crossing a section of the blast furnace area at Lithgow; The police chased him. Ho became excited and ran into a moving train and was killed., COMMONWEALTH POST OFFICE. Melbourne, September 12. A deputation headed by Mr Donkin protested against the early closing of post offices. Mr Thomas replied that the new regulations saved the Department £70,000. MAWSON’S EXPEDITION. Sydney, September 12. Cabinet has granted Dr. Mawson’s request for £7OOO. (Received 13, 8.50 a.m.) Fremantle, September 13. Lieutenant Watkins, aviator, who is accompanying Mawson’s expedition, has arrived with an aeroplane fitted for ice carriage. It will travel sleigh fashion when not otherwise in tise. The aviator anticipates that the polar cold will bo no bar to the flying machine, and should be specially useful in reconnaissances for traversable routes. In the event of making a dash for the Pole, they could stay in the air five hours and travel three hundred miles there and back in that time. The aeroplane carries one passenger.
CHURCH UNION. (Received 13, 10.10 a.m.) Melbourne, September 13. Archbishop Clarke has officially announced that the conference of the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches had arrived at a general agreement on the subject of doctrine, which points to the possibility of union as far as that was concerned. The subject of church government and policy were discussed and deferred for further consideration. SAVINGS BANK DEPOSITS. _ _ ' Melbourne, September 13. For the year ended Juno 30th the deposits in the Victorian Savings Bank were £17,274,424, an average of £29 Os 9d per depositor, against £15,417.BSS and £27 10s Id the previous year.
