DR. BOYD-CARPENTER.
The resignation of the Right Rev. Dr. Boyd-Carpenter, Bishop of Ripon, in his 70th year for reasons of heaito will be regretted by Anglicans the world over (remarks the Christchjureh “Press”). As a preacher lie had few equals, and certainly no superior. From the very first ho was destined for high office, for he was “persona grata” with the late Queen Victoria, who admired him for his courtly manners as well as for his wonderful eloquence. One writer said of him: — “To speak continuously with fluency and'lucidity, and at the same time with polished grace, seems to have become with him a second nature: and even the Hampton lectures or: ‘The Permanent Elements of Religion’ wore delivered without manuscript.” Ho first assumed prominence as Vicar of St. James’s, Holloway, London, where he was succeeded by Canon Stuart, who created so favourable an impression in Christchurch last year when the Anglican mission visited the city. A near neighbour of Bishop Carpenter’s at that time was the Rev. Churchill Julius, Vicar of Holy Trinity, Islington, now Bishop of Christchurch. A Canonry of Windsor brought Dr. Boyd-Carpenter in close contact with the English Court, and in 1881 no surprise was felt when Mr Gladstone nominated him to Ripon in succession to Dr. Bickorstcth. Many thought Ripon was but the stepping stone to York or Canterbury, but though each See has been vacant more than once since 3 88-1, no further preferment came to him.
