THE DRY SOUTH.
CANTERBURY NEEDS RAIN. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, August 29. Farmers in Canterbury are complaining at present of the absence of much-needed rain, and a comparison of rainfall recorded so far this month with the rainfall in the month of August for the past five or six years shows that their complaint is well founded. July this year was also a dry month, comparatively speaking. Rain fell on seventeen days last month, the total being 3.143 inches, as compared with 3.395 in 1906, 1.722 in 1907, 7.881 in 1908, 1.730 in 1909, and 6.043 in 1910. On four days only has rain been experienced during the present month from the Ist to the 29th inclusive, the total fall being 0.079 inches. In August 1906, rain fell on eleven days, the total fall being 1.582 inches; in 1907 on 14 days, 2.886 inches; in 1908, eight days, 0.743 inches; in 1909, 11 days, 2.405 inches; and in 1910, 12 days, 1.94 inches.
