It is reported from Matadi, Congo Free State, that the German steamer Edea was unloading gunpowder, when an explosion took place, which killed three whites, including one of the ship’s officers, and ten natives. FROZEN TO DEATH. New York, August 23. Two tourists named Skinner—man and wife—wore frozen to death on the Summit of Pike’s Peak. It is believed they were overtaken by a storm and lost their way.
• PRIZE FIGHTING. New York, August 23. A sailor name dßurke, at Brooklyn, outfought Papke in ten rounds. CANADA AND THE STATES. Ottawa, August 23. Mr Clifford, ex-Minister of tiie Interior, is campaigning in Ontario against reciprocity. He denounces entanglement with the United States, the sole aim of which will be the political absorption of Canada.
UNION CO. AND WIRELESS. (Received 24. 10 a.m.) London, August 23. Sir James Mills has concluded a contract with the Marconi Co. for an out-lit of wireless for eleven Union Co. steamers. SIR G. REID. London, August 23. Sir G. Reid underwent a slight operation, .and the fragment of a splintered bone was successfully removed. ENGLISH' HEAT WAVE. London, August 23. The death rate in London last week was 537 above the average; 620 infants under two years of age succumbed. The weekly average of infantile mortality prior to. the heat wave was IS, and the general death V ' rate 77 in the great towns, which corresponded to the annual rate of 20.9 per thousand compared with 13.6 three weeks previously.

The parties journeyed from Adelaide on the steamer Commomvealth April. Accused alleged the robbery of her effects at a London hotel, and obtained assistance from Mrs Foote. GERMAN LOCK-OUT. Berlin, August 23. Acting on the proposal of the Thuringian Metal Manufacturers’ Federation, a general lock-out in the German metal trade has been decided on! PORTUGAL’S PRESIDENT. Lisbon, August 23.
The salary of the President has been fixed at £5300 annually. A scheme for the payment of members has also been adopted. INCENDIARISM. Lisbon, August 23. Richter, who was kidnapped by bandits at the end of last May, has been discovered safe on the Greek frontier. PERSIAN AFFAIRS. Teheran, August 23. The ox-Shah’s army at Savadkuh was routed, losing over three hundred men. DROUGHT IN INDIA. Calcutta, August■ 23. The military manoeuvres at Delhi' prior to the Durbar have been cancelled owing to the drought. Three divisions, only equal to 50,000 men, will attend the Durbar.
