THE OPUNAKE RAILWAY.
STRATFORD BAULKING THE PETITION.
At the last meeting of the Normariby Town Board a letter was received from the clerk of the Stratford County Council stating that the Council objected to.sign the.petition re the railway unless the whole of Stratford electorate was included in the preamble of the petition. The Chairman remarked that this body, through their representatives, had been the only objectors at the Kapuni meeting, and it seemed to him that their only object in the present instance was to baulk the petition, as they evidently wanted Stratford to be tho terminus.
With these remarks, members generally concurred.
It ! was decided on the motion of Crs. Free and Preston to acknowledge tho letter and state that an error had inadverontly been- made in the petition preamble, but as tho petition in its present form had been very largely signed it was now too late to alter the wording as by so doing it would cause a lot of extra trouble and exr nense.
