ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.
A return was presented yesterday giving particulars of recent operations under the Advances to Settlers Act. The applications which could not bo
entertained and were refused by the department between April Ist, 19tb, and Juno oOth, 1911, numbered 4391. The application fees received during the same period amounted to £34,606 13s Id, and those returned to applicants who were refused loans (also during tho same period) amounted to £5430 9s sd. The sum of £215 3s Sd was paid to solicitors by the department for preparing mortgage deeds in the period.
EXAMINATION OF RECRUITS. A question put to tho acting-Min-ister of Defence yesterday by Mr Witty, drew an interesting reply in relation to the medical examination of youths under the defence scheme. The Hon. G. Fov.Tds said that any person could bo examined in a place other than that originally fixed for the examination on showing to tho officer of the former place his notice to present himself for examination. In such a case the officer would report to the officer of the place mentioned in the notice. The department was arranging to hold the examinations within a reasonable distance of the homes of tho men to be examined. If a man had removed to another place before his examination it was intended that ho should present himself at tho nearest centre.
