BURNING FATALITY.
CORONER’S ENQUIRY. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, August 17
At the coroner’s inquest on the body of Mrs Kelly, who r. as Mimed to death in a lire in Upper Queen street, Herbert Collier, residing next door, stated that.ho hoard a man and a woman in heated argument in the yard of Kelly’s promises. The quarrel ended by the woman i mining inside and locking the door. He distinctly heard the woman ;-ay, It yon killed your father, you won't kill me.” This was repeated several times. 'Witness did not know who was speaking, only that they were man and woman. He fell asleep at live o’clock, and two honks' later heard .of the fire and the arrest of Andrew Kelly on a charge of drunkenness.
Hairy Thompson deposed to finding Andrew Kelly in a dazed condition when the lire was discovered. Kelly told him nobody else was in the house. The jury returned an open verdict. THE SVSOKAU LANDS. (Per Press Association ) Wellington, August 18. The Native Affairs Committee sat this morning to investigate the Mokau lands transaction, this course having been decided upon by the House. Mr Jennings occupied the chair. The Committee decided that witnesses be examined on,oath. Mr Massey was first called. Ho stated that he understood the Government, by referring the, matter to the Native Affairs Committee, intended that it should receive the fullest investigation. He submitted a list of witnesses' he intended to call— Messrs Joshua Jones, Bowler (chairman of the Maiiiapoto Land Board), Herman Lewis, It. !>. 8011, T. McDonald (Otaki), and Hardy (Tc Knit!). He had very little to say beyond what he Tied already stated on the platform and in the House. He asked that the statements made by him should be contradicted by Sir James Carroll. The committee decided to commence the inquiry on Tuesday next, when Mr Masfccy will state Ids case, and the proceedings will then he adjourned..
The Committee consisted of Sir James Carroll, Messrs -Icnniegs, Ngat'a, .Homes, Madder, Parata, Rangihiroa, McDonald, Seddon, and Dive.
• SUPREME COURT. AUCKLAND SESSIONS. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, August 18. In the Supreme Court a native named Wharematangi, charged with three admitted' sexual offences on his sister, was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment; Robert Barker, on seven charges of false-preteyces, two months’- on each; charge (cumulative) and reformative treatment for three years.
