THE HEALTH OF MINERS.
(Per Press Association.) Thames, August 16. The Mines Commission is still sitting at the Thames. The evidence given so far has been that, the occupation of a miner is unhealthy, and this is due to having to work in a high temperature and breathe, in many cases, vitiated air. It was stated that at Thames carbon dioxide gas was prevalent. This injuriously affected the health of the men generally. The men favoured a standard temperature of about 80 degrees, and advocated firing by electricity where more than six holes were shot. Some managers opposed fixing a standard temperature, but agreed that certain places should be “six-hour places.” The Commission will visit Coromandel to-morrow, and will resume the sitting at Thames on Monday.
