Mr Lloyd-Georgo, replying to a question in the House of Commons, said Mr L. The temperature exceeded 80 degrees in London for eight days in succession. EXTENSIVE HEATH FIRE. . London, August 15. A heath fire five and a half miles long swept the Surrey Hills, threatening the sanatorium and dwellings. Five hundred troops were despatched from Aldershot to cut down a bolt of trees and avert danger. VOLCANO IN ERUPTION. (Received IG, 8.20 a.m.) Tokio, August 15. Asama is in eruption to-day. It is feared thirty who were climbing the mountain, > including several foreigners, have perished. THE POPE. (Received 16, 9.45 a.m.) . ~ Rome, August 15. The Pope passed a restless night, suffering from pain in the knee. His temperature rose and fell, but he was better in the morning. SOUTH AFRICA. Capetown, August 15. Lewis, who shot a native at Buluwayo for alleged indecency towards Lewis’s daughter, has been retried and acquitted on the charge of murder. A large crowd cheered the verdict.
