The census 'shows the population of the Union of all the races to lie 5,938,499 —Europeans 1,278,025, natives 4,061,082, and the rest from other countries. A feature of the returns is a shrinkage in the coast towns, except Durban, and increases in Johannesburg and Pretoria, where there has been a .steady increase iu nati/.’.s and other coloured races.
