LAWN TENNIS PLAYERS.

DEFINITION OF AMATEUR. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association (Mr. Fisher in the chair), the report by Air. G. A. Hurley was adopted and ordered to he forwarded to the New Zealand representatives upon the council of the Lawn Tennis Association, for the purpose of being considered at the annual meeting in November. Mr-. Hurley’s proposed definition is as follows: (a) An “amateur” means and includes a member of any Lawn Tennis Association drib or committee affiliated with or recognised by this association, who plays lawn tennis or otherwise supports the game for the benefits naturally arising therefrom, hut does not include any person who shall have, since the Ist day of January, 1910, played or agreed to play, refrained from playing or agreed to refrain from playing any game of lawn tennis in expectation of the receipt, directly or indu octly, of any monetary nr other valuable consideration, in return for such playing or refraining or such agreement as to either; provided that nothing herein contained or implied shall debar the payment by any such association club or committee, or by this association of any sum of money in repayment or reimbursement of the actual and reasonable expenses of any trip undertaken by a player for the sole purpose of playing for such association, or of a portion of such expenses in any case where a player may he travelling partly on private business or for pleasure. A machinery clause is also added as follows: “Only such associations, clubs and committees as will undertake to restrict their membership to amateurs, as herein donned, shall lid eligible for affiliation or recognition by this association.”
