SELLING MAORI LANDS TO THE CROWN. (Per Press Association!) Hastings, August 10. ; The Ikaroa Maori Land Hoard has had before it at Hastings to-day several meetings of assembled owners of native lands to hear their views as to selling to the Crown. The lands in question Owhaoko, Timahanga, Omahaki, Kaou and part of Awarua, representing roughly about 100,000 acres. Tlie land is of poor quality, the valuation ranging from 4s per acre to 10s, and is practically unpecu.pied. Should the Crown purchase, it is anticipated that the land will ire leased in large areas.. This will Have a double advantage, first, of .vaste lands being turned to profit, ■aid, second, the occupiers will band together to combat the advance of noxious weeds and rabbits ,which at present are such a growing menace to die lauds referred to, as well as to adjoining properties. The blocks referred to are on the slopes of the Auahine, extending beyond Kuripaoango inland to Patea. THE “NE TEMERE” DEGREE. Wellington, August 10. WELLINGTON RESERVES. Wellington, August 10. The City Council to-night decided to purchase an additional 75 acres of land at Lyall Bay, making a reserve there of 100 acres. The price for flic latest purchase is £125 per acre. The Government will contribute half the cost, and will use the reserve for territorial parades and other purposes iu connection with defence.
