AUSTRALIAN CARNIVAL. (Received 10, 11.20 a.m.) Adelaide, August 10. At the football carnival South Australia defeated New South Wales and Victoria boat West Australia. AN AMATEUR DEFINITION. (Received 10, 10.30 a.m.) Sydney, August 10. Tiro Now South Wales Football Association (British Association rules) has withdrawn from the Sporting Federation and adopted a now amateur definition which permits professionals in other branches of sport to play as amateurs, provided they are not paid for playing football. Players from outside the Commonwealth are deemed amateurs on landing in Australia. NORTH ISLAND COUNTRY TEAM V. WELLINGTON.
(For Press Association.) Wellington, August 9. Tiie match Wellington v. tne North Island Country Team, was . played hero to-day, in glorious weather, and before a moderate attendance. A ictory resulted with the local team Uy 20 points to nil. Moffatt, Bell, Mitchiuson, Roberts, and Southern scored, Evenson converting Mitchinson’s try and kicking a goal from a mark. In tiie first spell tne game was very oven, the hue country forwards playing with great heart, following up, dribbling, and tackling in great style, aho score was six to mi' at h.uf time, the country team just missing scoring on several occasions. Tiie country backs wore very uncertain in fielding, kicking and passing, McKenzie being the duel delinquent. Mexted was the best back, and Carroll, Barry, and Smith the best of a hard-working lot of forwards. SOUTH ISLAND v. SOUTHLAND. Invercargill, August 9. Tiie tonring South Island football team played the third match of the tour here to-day against Southland, the home team winning by 14 to 9. Southland, with a strong wind in their favour, scored a penalty goal in the first live minutes. Fordo, the home half, next scored cleverly from the South Island’s twenty-live, The visitors then settled down, anc\ Todd scored near the posts, living^tailing. 'Then Sheridan got over. Within a few minutes Irving again failed, the spell ending G all. Southland yvero in difficulties in the opening of the second half, Richards scoring. Then Southland pushed, by means of loose rushes) and Stead scored from a scrum in the corner, Martin tailing with the kick. The game developed fast and interesting, horde made a bountiful opening for Southland. McNeece got over, and Martin goaled. The visitors struggled ham, but there was no further score, the game ending an above.
