BUTTER IN COOL STORES. (IVr Press Association.) Wellington, August 1. The quantity of butter in cool stores in boxes throughout Now Zealand, as on July 31, is as follows: Auckland 2265, New Plymouth 343, Patoa 230, Wellington 15-10, Lyttelton 100, Dunedin 230; a total of 4717 boxes. For tiic same period List year the total in store was 16,894 boxes. PRINTING BOOKMAKERS’ ODDS. Christchurch, August 1. Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., gave his decision to-day in the adjourned case of the police v. Alexander Wikley, in which the defendant was charged with having printed a document containing a notification, on behalf of a person, on certain horse races to be run. Tno evidence showed that defendant printed a card giving a bookmaker’s odds regarding tiic Grand National Steoplocnaso, the Grand National Hurdles, and the Winter Cup. Mr. Cassidy, for the defendant, at the hearing of the case, cited the caso of Barnett v. Bishop, known as the “Daylight Caso,” the Court on that occasion having held that it was not illegal to print racing information, unless some person or chib -was mentioned in the publication. The card that Mr. Wildey printed did not contain the name of the parson for whom it was printed. In giving his decision, the Magistrate said that the present case was clearly distinguishable from the case of Barnett v. Bisiioj>, and he intended to convict defendant. He understood that the Inspector of Police. in Ids capacity of Justice of the Peace, had demanded the production of a duplicate copy of the card, a printer being bound by law to keep sucii a duplicate copy of everything ho printed. “Why was it not produced on demand?” Mr. Cassidy replied that he did not know. He had no information on that point. Tiic Magistrate: “Very well; the defendant is fined £lO, and costs.” VERDICT OF INCENDIARISM. Waimnto, August 1. ' An enquiry was hold this afternoon into the cause of the recent fire at the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Store before Mr. Hutcheson, S.M., and a jury. After hearing the evidence, the verdict was that the lire was wilfully caused by some person or persons unknown. BURGLARY AT MGR YEN. Waimato, August 1. The house of Mr. B.Snmii was broken into at Morven on Saturday. The safe was opened and £1!) and a quantity of jewellery' was stolon. Thors is no trace as yet of the person who entered the house. The inmates wore in Waimate at the time. STATE OYSTER INDUSTRY. Auckland, August 1. The Auckland oyster season closed yesterday, and there will bo no more picking on the. northern oyster beds fill May' next. The season has been closed much earlier this year than is _ usual, _ the Marino Department official,s coysuloriug that the beds have been Eufticiontlv’’depleted by the pickings to date. Mr. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, who is at present in Auckland, explains "that the action of the Department in closing the season thus early was necessary in pursuance _of the policy decided upon two or three years ago. Before the oyster beds were under State control indiscriminate and careless picking almost brought about ruination of the industry. The northern ovster beds are now being nursed hack to a healthy and productive condition. and when that object is attained the Department will be able to cone with the demand from every mint of the Dominion throughout the whole season.
