DEATH OF CAPTAIN STEWART.

He had the topsail schooner Dunedin built at Dundee and sailed her out to Now Zealand, his wife and daughter being'on hoard. The Dundee traded successfully until the s.s. Tairoa came out. Upon reaching Dunedin the position of master of the ship was given to Captain Stewart. That; would ho about 1875 or 1870. The Tairoa was put into the Timani trade,- ami Captain Stewart retained command until the vessel was sold to the Union Steam Ship Co., when ho was transferred to the Beautiful Star. Shortly afterwards lie was sent .Home by Idle Harbour Board to bring out the Dredge 222. He steamed' her out and bad some adventures by the way in that umveildy craft. During dirty weather in the Bay of Biscay, the pumps got chocked and ■ the yejsrd filled. Many men would hav-? lost her and the whole crew, but Captain Stewart, being a strong swimmer, dived into the bilge, and got the pumps cleared. It was a feat only possible by a strong, brave man. Captain Stewart afterwards took ilia dredge to Melbourne and brought !,r-i back after the hiring term. He also steamed her to Wellington, and 1 tier that retired from the sea for good, and many years ago settled down to a quiet life.
