TRAM REGULATIONS.

A FIERY MINISTER. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 25. A deputation from the conference of the tramway systems waited on the Minister for huhlic Works (the Hon. 11. McKenzie) to express their views on the proposed tram regulations. When Councillor Smith (Acting-May-or) rose to speak, Mr McKenzie said: Mr Smith’s conduct has been so discreditable that I prefer to deal with someone else. Mr Smith: 1 think your remarks quite unjustifiable for one who is a Minister of the Crown. The Minister: Yob can think what .ymi like; that is my opinion. In the course of further remarks .Mr McKenzie said that no honourable ’ man would do .what Mr Smith had done. Mr Smith : I protest; you have no right to speak to me like that. Mr McKenzie: You had better bo quite curty or else I will order you out of the room. Mr CL T. Booth, chairman of the Christchurch Tramways Board, then made representations on behalf of the conference, after expressing regret at the incident.
