FIRE AT WHANGAMOMONA.

THE HOTEL TOTALLY DESTROYED. The news reached ns this morning that Air F. Caigber’s Wbangamomona Hotel had been totally destroyed by lire at 2.30 a.m. to-day. So far very little is available regarding the outbreak, but a message received by us states that at mid-night there was no sign of the conflagration. Two hours later, however, an alarm was given, and it was found that the. fire .had a good hold in an upstairs room, above the kitchen, and it is suggested that some defect in the chimney was probably the cause of the outbreak. All efforts to stay the fire proved unavailing, and the house, together, with its contents, was speedily destroyed. The property is owned by Mr 11. Campbell, of New Plymouth, and is insured in the Commercial Union and other offices, but so far details are not available. Later information discloses the fact that the building was insured for £IOOO in the Phoenix office and for £SOO in the Commercial Union office. The stock and furniture were insured in the Royal Exchange office.

The destruction cf the hotel at this time is particularly unfortunate,, as Mr. Fred Calgher I’nul just renovated the whole' place, and under his capable management it was a most popular and comfortable hostelry.
