Crichton, ex-hon. secretary of the Manchester butter conference, is visiting New Zealand on 1 behalf of the well-known firm of Weddell and Co., Ltd., London, in order 3 to arrange'for largely increased supplies. interviewed by the “Waira--1 rapa Daily Times,” he said large J numbers of buyers all over the United ’ Kingdom were now taking up our produce who formerly never handled ! the same, admitting it to bo as good as any country in the world. It was ’ a mistake to suppose that all our dairy produce was sold in London. On the contrary, it was sold in a hundred places all over the Kingdom, and in., Germany and other . Continental towns. The trade was expanding very rapidly, and called for fresh methods of distribution. The quality of our butter was not below Danish,' but tire latter was obtainable all the yearround. Mr Crichton advocated winter dairying in New Zealand so as to keep London supplied constantly. He also says tire .Government should advertise our products by means of popular lantern lectures on farming in New Zealand; also the history of butter and choose from the cew to the British table throughout the United Kingdom. Buyers at Home were thoroughly satisfied with the Government supervision of produce at this end, but too much care could not be exorcised, as an excess of moisture of foreign flavour iu odd shipments ra-awakened the old prejudice against imported frozen produce. Mr Crichton strongly favours the establishing of new superfine grade butter, which will raise the standard of all grades. Cow-testing was, also very important. . Referring to cheese, Mr Crichton said the quality cannot be improved. Our cheese in many cases was better .than Canadian. Supplies of tiro latter were falling off, and prospects' were very bright. He anticipated a largely increased demand for New Zealand 1 cheese at Home next season.
