A meeting of teachers decided by a largo majority that the formation of a trades union 'of teachers would bo inimical to the best interests of the profession. The requisite twenty Leagues have petitioned that a special Labour Congress be called to consider the action of the State Ministers and members who opposed the recent referendum. Perth, July 24. The Wharf Labourers’ Union has notified steamship owners that the Federation will not handle free labour sugar. Brisbane, July 24. Another cane fire has occurred at Cairns. The damage is slight. There has been a hostile demonstration against free labourers at, Bundaberg by a large crowd of strikers, but no violence is reported. Growers in the Mackey district have resolved to cooperate with other districts in resisting the men’s demands. The Government has set aside eighty acres at Yoronga as zoological gardens for Brisbane.
