ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 21. A serious quarrel occurred between a sailor and a man named Swanson on the barque Duncraig to-night, resulting in the latter receiving two deep gashes with a knife, besides lesser. injuries. The sailor was arrested. Dunedin, July 21. A sad accident occurred at Freeman’s coal mine, Abbortsford, last night, whereby a young married man named James Walker lost his life, i t appears he was working on the ,night shift taking out pillars. About 12 o’clock his mate called him, and receiving no answer went to see if anything was wrong. He discovered that a fall had taken place, burying Walker. An Jj&rfn was at once given, and willing hands set to work to recover the body,; which was extricated at 11 o’clock this morning. The deceased leaves a wife and one child, for whom much sympathy is felt. Walker was the son of Mr Walker, owner of the Brighton Colliery. He learned his business with his father, and was a good minor, as wel 1 as a popular and respected young follow. This is the first serious accident that has happened in the mine s>nce it was opened 4G years ago.
