FOOTBALL.
TARANAKI RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION.
The Committee of the Rugby Union met at the Borough Council chamber last night. Present: Messrs Buchanan qin Die chair), and McLeod, Rev. Scott and Skoglund (secretary).
NEXT THURSDAY’S MATCHES. It was decided that Stratford and Tukapa meet at New Plymouth next Thursday, Clifton meeting Eltham at Waitara, unless the committee decides differently in the meantime as, regards the latter match. BAYLY SCHOLARSHIP. Messrs Tyrer and Pridham asked that the atnletic competitions in connection with the Bayly Scholarship should be held at the end of October. —lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Messrs Cargill, Malone, and Sgogiund. JUNIOR PLAY-OFF. The second grade play-off, Waimate v. Stratford is to be played at Kaponga on July 20th. The date for the play-off in the first junior section was left in the hands of the executive.
THURSDA Y-SATUR DAY PLAYERS The secretary of the Rovers’ Club wrote stating that on July Bth, Star , played two Thursday men in their match with Rovers. The club did not wish to claim the match on a protest, but desired some ruling on the matter.—lt was decided that the match be re-played, and that the Star Club bo informed that no Thursday players can be played on Saturday without they are transferred in regular course by the Union, and that the two men in question be declared Saturday players. ROUGH PLAY. A. F. Xeilson, referee, reported having ordered Rurn Lam, an Okaiawa player, off the field in the Ha-wera-Okaiawa match on July Ist for very rough play. A. Hawera player was knocked down by Rurn some time after he had parted with the ball, and ho was so seriously injured that he could not continue the game. The Secretary reported that he had received no reply to his letter to the Okaiawa Club stating that. Rurn had been suspended, and it was decided to hold the matter over till next meeting to enable a reply to be received. THE SCHOOL GRANT.
„ The Secretary of the New Zealand Union wrote: With reference to your statement concerning school grants, 1 have been directed to call your attention to the fact that tho sum of £lO has been wrongly devoted to the Bayly Memorial Fund. For this reason no allocation has been ; made to your Union this year. You are expected to spend the £lO in the desired direction, namely, that for which it was voted—the encouragement of primary school football. I have further to remind you that this Union passed a special vote for the purpose of the Bayly fund. The letter was received.GENERAL.
J. Hunter acknowledged good wishes sent by the Union by telegrom on bis recent marriage. Tho headmaster cf the Now Plymouth High School reported that Archibald Bacon tho Bayly Scholar, had displayed satisfactoTjm diligence, and was regular in attendance. Mr Bigham, referee in the third junior match, Kairnate v. Kaponga, on July Bth, reported having suspended Barnes (Kaponga) for using insulting language to him during the progress of the match.—lt was decided that Barnes bo cautioned. A voto of thanks was passed to the Hawera Club for assistance rendered in connection with the recent rep. match at Hawera. The Secretary of the New Zealand Union asked that one or two names of local referees should be submitted as early as possible, so that the Union and the manager of the County team would be able to fix on a referee for tho Taranaki match in good time.
W. E. Hawke, secretary of the llrati Club, wrote asking permission for the TTruti, Ur'enui and Tongaporutu to plnv a local contest for a cup which had been promised for competition.—The contest was approved.
